Here you will find an alphabetical overview of funding programs with 3R relevance. The Bf3R makes every effort to ensure that the information is up-to-date, correct and complete. If you would like to contribute additions or be added to the list, please contact bf3r@bfr.bund.de.

BMBF

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research funds research and development projects with the aim of replacing or reducing the use of animals by alternative methods or limiting the stress on laboratory animals to the indispensable level. Furthermore, concepts for the dissemination as well as strategies for the implementation of alternative methods are to be supported. Since the amendment of the guideline for the funding of "Alternative Methods to Animal Experiments" (Bundesanzeiger, 02.03.2021), the VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH is responsible for the handling of the funding measure. Information on the call for proposals is provided on the websites.

German Research Foundation (DFG)

The German research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) funds knowledge-oriented research through individual projects or coordinated programs as well as through scientific infrastructure. In particular, it focuses on the promotion of young scientists.

Einstein Foundation Berlin

The Einstein Foundation Berlin has been funding the Einstein Center 3R since 2021 with the aim of developing new therapies for human diseases and strengthening animal welfare at the same time. For example, 3D models from human tissue cultures will replace animal experiments and improve the transferability of laboratory findings to patients. The website provides information on key topics, funded projects and events.

set Foundation (set)

The set Foundation for the Promotion of Alternative and Complementary Methods for the Restriction of Animal Experiments was founded in 1986. On the initiative of the then Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry, animal welfare organizations and representatives of industry work together in this foundation. Set supports three main areas: (1) Funding of research projects to develop replacement and supplementary methods, (2) Scientific communication and international activities related to 3Rs, and (3) Education and training.
